Guyana - Travel Guide

From the sweeping Savannah in the south, to rivers that explore deep into her heart, Guyana is a varied land of geographical and cultural wonder. Although located on the South American continent, the lilting Guyanese accent is clearly Caribbean, as is their love for a good party complete with soca, calypso, reggae or dancehall music.

The majority of the population live on the coast, further in however, one sees why this land inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, as you head into the unexplored and unchartered Amazon basin. Jaguar roam wild, and howler monkeys call from the trees overhead as colourful macaws and toucans burst from the foliage. It is here, deep in the interior that varying aboriginal tribes still have autonomous communities and live similarly to how they did years ago when they first set out to explore the islands to the north.

On the border of this country that inspired Sir Walter Raleigh’s search for El Dorado, are the majestic Pakaraima Mountains reachable only by plane or on foot. Here is where you find the breathtaking Kaieteur Falls, easily one of the most powerful falls on the planet, which has the rare combination of great height and great volume. Only India's Jog Falls can rival this combination.

Guyana is an eco tourism dream, however, the beauty of it’s capital, Georgetown should not be passed over, with it’s wide treelined streets, Georgian Colonial architecture, lily covered canals and naturally the best botanical gardens in the Caribbean.
