Saint Lucia - Travel Guide

Say ‘St Lucia’ and immediately the image of the Pitons come to mind. One of the Caribbean’s most dramatic natural phenomenon, these two half mile high, jungle mantled volcanic peaks rise majestically from the sea. Likened to Helen of Troy in that the British and French went to war over possession of the island no less than fourteen times, this “Helen of the West Indies” names English as its chief language, but the French influence is still present in the strongly French influenced cuisine and lilting creole Kwéyòl spoken by nearly 80 percent of the population.

Although the beaches are spectacular, ranging from volcanic black sand to stretches of white, and offering the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea as well as the deep indigo of the Atlantic, it would be a shame to vacation here for the beaches alone. Not when one can drive up to a benignly smoking volcano then descend once more to soak in sulphuric hot springs, or hike and camp throughout the untamed foliage that abounds with wildlife and is an ornithological paradise. Throughout the year, enjoy the nights at a local Friday night ‘jump up’ street dance and if you’re lucky enough to be there in May, don’t miss the internationally renowned St. Lucia Jazz Festival which hosts the world’s jazz greats.
