St Kitts and Nevis - Travel Guide

This double island nation could possibly be the ideal Caribbean vacation destination. The south of St. Kitts  cradles signature tropical white sand beaches while on the north coast, volcanic black sand beaches glisten in the sun with Mount Liamuiga rising majestically above to a height of  1,200m (3,940 ft.). The now dormant volcano is a major draw for visitors to the island, formerly known as St. Christopher island or Saint-Christophe. Liaguima was the original name for this island and means ‘fertile isle’. The lush virgin rain forests at its centre filled with hummingbirds and green vervet monkeys, help this island live up to that claim.

The capital of St. Kitts, Basseterre is the heart of this small nation. Although small, it is a strong Eastern Caribbean financial centre, the main port of entry, home to major medical institutions and has outbid other nations to host major international sporting events. Yet, the picturesque wooden buildings and white picket fences look like you’ve stepped back in time.

For a unique look back at the island, take the ferry across to the dormant volcano sister island of Nevis. There you can lay out on Pinney’s Beach, a reef protected stretch of dark gold sand with panaromic vistas of St. Kitts.
